‘Be There’ portal supports Filipino game developers

The country’s gaming industry has shown remarkable growth in the past couple of years, and with an enthusiastic market response and a wide range of options now available for both hardcore and casual Filipino gamers, more growth and development seem to be in the offing.

Level Up!, which popularized Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) such as the phenomenal Ragnarok Online, speaks to casual gamers with the latest addition to its roster of hits.

“Be There Philippines” is a browser-based portal currently hosting more than 30 quick and entertaining flash-based games.

Level Up! partners with Boonty, one of the largest casual game platform developers — whose customized end-to-end solutions are implemented by major publishers worldwide — to bring fun, fair and free casual games to the market.

Built to run simple interfaces, Be There Philippines is readily accessible to the public and presents a slew of puzzle, arcade and card games, including Sudoku Arena, Manor Mystery, Twin Spin and Animal Checkers.

The portal features a MiniMe creator where players can select pre-generated and customizable avatars to fit their personalities.

Casual gamers can also choose to play individual games or try more challenging multiplayer ones that allow for friendly competition and interaction between members of the Be There community.

But more than just a gaming and social networking avenue for casual gamers, Be There, according to brand manager Colin Chan, is also poised to serve as a platform for Filipino game developers to showcase their talent and skills.

“What is truly unique about Be There is that, as the platform where proudly Pinoy-developed games will be published, it provides us with a great opportunity to promote, recognize and support our very own local game developers,” Chan said.

Level Up! is currently working hand in hand with Flipside, an established group of local game developers, to create games that inject Pinoy flavor and flair to online casual gaming, as well as those tailor-fit to the tastes of the Filipino gamer.

The game publisher also recently took part in the GDAP-initiated series of academic seminars to assist educators who are looking into introducing game development courses and integrating game development concepts into their curriculum.

The GDAP or Game Developers Association of the Philippines is a non-stock, non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the game development industry in the Philippines.

Level Up! participated via a sponsored talk on its casual gaming platform, highlighting Be There and its student development initiative.

Dubbed the first Be There Young Game Developers Program, it aims to promote local game development by engaging student developers to create a game for the Be There platform, while offering them a venue to showcase their creativity and talent in flash-based game development.
